King George the III was the 29th King of Great Britain. Known as the King who lost the American colonies, his diary records his thoughts on July 4, 1776 as, “Nothing of great importance happened today.” Late in his reign, George the Third was recognized as violently insane. His son, George the Fourth, became Prince Regent, governing according to the erratic will of his father. The rest of the King’s life was spent in isolation, and he was often kept in straight jackets and behind bars in his private apartments at Windsor Castle.
